Roulette is often referred to as the classiest gambling game in the world. Chances are you’ve seen it being featured in films, television and literature over the years. Similarly to other casino games, there are several competing theories as to its origins. One of the most popular being that it was invented by a French scientist called Blaise Pascal in 1655, when he was looking for a way to kill time during his monastic retreat. Roulette was then played in Paris and eventually became a casino staple across the globe, resulting in a variety of different versions of the game.
The two most popular versions are American and European roulette. Both versions are played the same way, the only difference being that the American table has two zeros whilst the European has just one zero.
Today anyone who has access to the Internet is able to enjoy this hugely popular game and all its variations.
What types of Roulette I can play?
There are many variations of roulette, though the most commonly played roulette game in the UK is the European variation. Here are the main variations of roulette you will come across online and how they differ:
European Roulette – players are able to place a bet on numbers 1-36, red or black, or even the columns. The table has just one zero in European roulette.
American Roulette – the classic Vegas variation of the game has two zeros instead of the European’s one. This often results in potentially bigger payouts.
French Roulette – most similar to European rules, but French roulette also has the added En Prison and La Partage ‘insurance’ bets, which give you half your money back if a zero lands.
Multi-Ball Roulette – as well as the traditional roulette games it is also possible to play up to three balls on the same wheel. This version is a good way to improve your overall odds of winning.
Live dealer roulette
It is possible to play online roulette with both software and a live dealer. If you’re after a more realistic roulette experience then playing with a live dealer online allows you to stream and bet on a real game via your device.
Online roulette is available to play on all device platforms provided you have an Internet connection and the particular games provider has enabled mobile play.
How to play Roulette
There are many variations of roulette, but regardless of the version you choose to play, the basic premise is that each version’s wheel includes at least numbers 1 to 36 remains the same. The American version has 38 numbers, a single and double zero, whilst the European version only has one zero.
It’s possible to place many different bets in roulette and this adds to the excitement. Each of the numbers on the wheel is red or black, as well as a green 0. The wheel’s numbers are also replicated on a board where the player places their bets.
Players are able to bet on any single numbers, odd or even, red or black. It’s also possible to bet on entire columns, a split bet where you bet on two different numbers, a corner bet where you cover 4 different numbers, the first dozen numbers, second dozen and so on.
Once bets are placed the dealer will then spin the ball clockwise and the wheel counter clockwise. The ball will then eventually land on one of the numbers and reveal whether you have won your bet or not.
